Toronto-based singer, songwriter, pianist, and guitarist Michael Sawers—better known on stage as The M.A.S. Project—has been shaping his sound for nearly two decades. Now 26, he’s logged 20 years on piano, 10 years as a vocalist, and added both electric and acoustic guitar to a skill set that fuels his high-energy pop/rock performances.
Music became Michael’s compass in high school, when he joined his older brothers’ blues rock band. While the group disbanded as everyone chose university over touring, Michael refused to let the dream fade. He launched The M.A.S. Project, named for his initials, to keep writing, singing, and performing throughout school.
From despair-laced rock anthems and piano ballads to country-tinged love songs, Michael captures his unique experiences as an artist. His lyrics move from self-aware confession to cinematic storytelling, often nodding to pop culture—yes, a sly Star Wars reference—while his melodies draw on the dynamism of his favourite artists like Roman Clarke.
Live, The M.A.S. Project channels that eclectic spirit into shows as unpredictable as they are electric. He’s played marquee Toronto stages including The Drake Hotel, Sneaky Dee’s, and even a corporate set at Massey Hall, blending blues, rock, pop, soul, country, and folk into a seamless, high-energy set.
