Who: Lucy Ellis

Folk

Lucy Ellis is a singer/songwriter and composer based in Toronto who is always writing songs in her head. She grew up playing classical piano and standards at retirement homes while making songs on Garageband to show to her teachers during recess. Her biggest influences growing up were movie scores. They made her feel like whatever she was going through was part of a greater story - like in a movie.

During the pandemic, Lucy produced covers with arrangements that were uniquely hers: adding a jazzy twist or an underscore of cinematic strings. During that time she was diagnosed with depression, and began writing originals to figure out how she was feeling, influenced by songwriters like Paul Simon, and poetry she enjoyed in high school like Robert Frost. Writing helped her make sense of things, and she started to post her original songs on YouTube.

Since beginning to post, she’s gained over 140,000 subscribers, 20,000,000 video plays, and a placement in HBO’s “Made for Love.” She’s collaborated with Juno nominated artists and frequently collaborates with the SOCAN and CSA award-winning Ari Posner. Above all, she found a community of fans worldwide who related to lyrics she wrote feeling alone. So while she writes music to heal, she writes knowing it might reach others too, and do what music did for her growing up.

With Ari Posner and his background in scoring for film and TV, Lucy co-produced her debut EP “Come of Age,” and found her genre - Folk with a film score twist. Since its release, she’s gotten 9 million combined streams. Now, she continues to produce for her youtube channel, score short films, and play around Toronto. She was a recent participant in ArtHaus’ “On the Haus” studio sessions and can’t wait to share her new originals this year.
