Joe Mungovan knows what’s good for you - and, incidentally, what’s bad for you too. Naturally, he prefers the latter. Hurts is the third release this year from indie-rock artist Joe Mungovan, fresh off East Coast tours with The Vanns and Brad Cox. The track is an emotionally unhinged ode to a situationship held together by the intoxicating thrill of the chase. Sonically, Joe draws inspiration from Balu Brigada, The Jungle Giants and a nostalgic dose of Franz Ferdinand, weaving a seriously catchy melody that captures the excitement, frustration, disappointment - and ultimately, the thrill - of wanting something (or someone) you know is just no good for you. From tea-making to trauma bonding, Hurts takes listeners on a ride that proves, in the end, maybe we’re all just gluttons for punishment. To mark the release, Joe will be playing with The Rubens at Barn on the Ridge and has added a small string of additional shows below: 22 November - Milton 29 November - Kiama 30 November - Newcastle 03 January - Freshwater

Who: Joe Mungovan

Indie Rock

At the age of nine, a young Joe Mungovan would never have imagined that begging his parents “for a drum kit for Christmas” would pave his way onto some of the most prestigious stages in Australia. The now singer/songwriter, crashed his skateboard at the age of 13, leaving him unable to play his drumkit and in a wheelchair for 4 months. Joe taught himself guitar and unconsciously developed a style that blends indie rock and pop together to produce his unique style. With attention to articulate lyrics, catchy melodies and rhythmic detail, Joe’s songs express his genuine emotion. His authenticity and passion is conveyed in his intimate live show, and is an experience not worth missing.

Throughout his career, Joe Mungovan has consistently constructed melodies that expand from traditional pop and rock songwriting structures. His songs have been played across Triple j, Double j and community radio, video support across Rage and MTV and press praise in Rolling Stone, Pilerats, Music Feeds, Au Review, The Music to name a few. Mungovan’s songwriting has also seen him nominated for an APRA Award and Golden Guitar Award in 2021, and a Finalist in the International Songwriting Competition.
