What: Msafiri Zawose @ Hägerstensåsens Medborgarhus

When:

Msafiri Zawose @ Hägerstensåsens Medborgarhus Here to open the season’s first Spelmansmusik på Åsen, we have the great honor of welcoming a long-distance great fiddler of rank. Artist Msafiri Zawose is one of the very best in Tanzania’s traditional gogo music, which together with the multi-part singing is often associated with the string instrument zeze and the thumb piano ilimba. Gogo music has a central and obvious place in everyday life in his hometown of Bagamoyo, where Msafiri Zawose grew up in a large family of musicians headed by his father Hukwe Zawose, a giant in Tanzanian music who collaborated with Peter Gabriel, among others. Msafiri Zawose began touring professionally at the age of twelve, and since then and to this day has been passionate about bringing gogo music into the future. The core of Msafiri Zawose’s music remains the modality and feeling of traditional music, but he also lets his music meet modern styles, including in the organic-electronic hybrid gogo album Uhamiaji, released on the British Soundway. At Spelmansmusik på Åsen we meet this artist in a luxurious solo format, but with a great chance of guest appearances by various exciting Stockholm musicians.

Who: Msafiri Zawose

African Traditions
Msafiri Zawose is renowned for his traditional Gogo style music, which relies heavily on the zeze & limba in combination with distinct lyrical harmonies. This rich musical tradition is from the Wagogo people Dodoma in Central Tanzania. Msafiri Zawose, son of the late Dr. Hukwe Zawose, continues this musical tradition while fusing with more modern styles, creating a truly distinct and unique sound.
