Gunilla Törnfeldt is a jazz vocalist, composer, and Associate Professor of Voice at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. She has been a vital presence on the Swedish jazz scene since her debut in 2002, when she started performing as a student alongside Swedish jazz legends such as Monica Dominique, Carl-Axel Dominique, Georg Riedel, Jan Allan, and Ove Lundin.
With a distinctive voice and fearless curiosity, she moves effortlessly between the intimate space of the solo artist and the collective strength of vocal ensembles. She is widely recognized as an innovative and expressive force within contemporary Swedish jazz. In 2006, she was awarded the Fasching Friends’ Scholarship for “approaching the renewal and development of jazz and adjacent genres with great seriousness and strong commitment.”
Her critically acclaimed debut album A Time for Everything was released in 2009, followed by Behind the Mask in 2017. Her upcoming third album, Unraveling (2025), is a deeply personal musical journey about reclaiming one’s power, healing old wounds, and allowing yourself to shine. It features Gunilla’s compositions alongside interpretations of songs by artists such as Joni Mitchell and Elton John.
In addition to her solo work, she is the founder of the vocal group Stockholm Voices, which has captivated audiences since 2012 with its rich harmonies and musical precision. The group has performed to sold-out venues, been featured on national radio, and released the acclaimed albums Come Rain or Come Shine (2015) and New Horizon (2023).
Gunilla Törnfeldt’s music reflects a deep respect for the jazz tradition, while always reaching forward. Her compositions are marked by sparse yet powerful melodies, intelligent arrangements, and an expressive, rhythmically free approach. Her vocal style combines emotional tenderness with dramatic intensity – a voice that moves and empowers.
