From the extreme south of Europe (Apulia, Italy) to the Global South of the World: cumbia, afro-funk and tropical grooves (with a pinch of dub psychedelia and a splash of jazz…) blend together in the sound of Cocoa Thrill.
“Subtropical”, the band’s debut album, is a journey through rhythms from the warmest latitudes of the planet, mixed and reworked with an ear to the roots and one to contemporary world music. The album title itself is a reference to the closeness of Southern Italy to South American and African cultures, due to the long history of Mediterranean contaminations and relations with Spanish dominations: a closeness also in climate and landscape (especially in an era of global warming), so much so that the climate of Southern Italy is defined precisely as “subtropical”.
Cocoa Thrill is a band with no singer nor lyrics but with an evident implicit message, which communicates integration, attention to the needs of the South of the World (be it Salento or the Caribbean, Latin America or West Africa) and the desire to unite people around something positive and proactive.
