Who: Ricki Wood

Contemporary Folk

Ricki Wood is a vocalist / guitarist, with a melting pot of folk, country, rock and Americana. Likened to varied artists like John Williamson, Colin Hay, Bon Iver and even Johnny Cash. Ricki is an artist whose genre cannot be pigeonholed and is known for live shows that are real, raw, a bit comedic and yet vulnerable.

“I recently discovered Ricki Wood on the north coast of NSW. I just love his stuff. Lovely voice. Great musicianship” Normie Rowe

Raised in the small Gippsland town of Maffra, Ricki first started playing the keyboard at age eight. It was at that very moment that he declared that music would be his life. At age 12, the family shifted to NZ and by 13, Ricki drifted towards guitar and singing. By age 16, he was writing and performing in bands. Being the late 80’s into the 90’s, Ricki’s writing was mostly rock and metal focused, but he always wrote some folk and country inspired stuff off to the side. After all, growing up on a healthy diet of Willie Nelson, Charley Pride, John Denver and the likes under his parents watchful ear, it was hard to not still have those inspirations to fuel the other side of his love of music.

“Emotive, heartfelt, authentic” Dallas Frasca

Mid 90’s saw Ricki being called on to perform in popular covers bands in Auckland, which really opened him up to playing varied genres of music. The covers were fun, but didn’t serve his soul, so in the early 2000’s, Ricki swung on into the rockabilly scene with his band The Voodoo Kreepers. They made quite the splash with performances at festivals like GreazeFest (Aus) and The Beach Hop (NZ) along with being the opening act for many touring bands including Darrel Higham and Slim Jim Phantom of the Stray Cats.

“One of the best musos Gippsland has ever produced” Mick Harrington - The Voice 2021

In 2011, Ricki returned home to Australia and carved his way into the music scene by once again performing covers and all the while, writing, recording and releasing self produced albums along the way. Ricki’s latest 7 song album, “Live at Hello’, was released early 2025 and features Ricki in the raw with just his guitar and a microphone capturing it all as it happened. The rawness of music is what Ricki loves the most. It creates the space, the vulnerability and the honesty of the moment.

Good Lord. How good is this guy? Frankie J Holden AOM (Ol’ 55)

In May 2025, Ricki attended The DAG Songwriting Retreat where he cowrote songs with some incredible artists including Shane Nicholson, Lola Brinton, Carly Robinson, Owen Thomas and Brendan Nowrocki to name a few. This retreat was a moment that changed Rick’s life as he decided to give up his normal ‘cover gigs’ and focus more on his writing, releasing songs and touring everywhere he can go.

“How the hell have I never heard of you until now?” Kevin Bennett

Whether at a house concert, venue, caravan park, outside a shopping mall or at a major festival, Ricki will captivate you with his songs that are filled with the journeys of life, ups and downs, a few laughs, maybe more tears than expected. It is these moments of connection where true magic is found.
