What: Merpire @ Howler

When:

Merpire @ Howler

Merpire’s fans had mixed feelings of shock, disappointment and joy when learning her two solo ‘MILK POOL’ album launch shows in Naarm / Melbourne had sold out in less than 72 hours, two months in advance. For those who missed out on the August shows, Merpire is thrilled to announce a final album launch show, this time with her full band at one of Merpire’s favourite-sounding venues, Howler in Brunswick on the 9th of October.

Merpire’s last album launch for her first record, ‘Simulation Ride’ saw her surprising the crowd by disappearing off the main stage and turning up on a side stage for a different point of view and inviting a choir up for a song. In true Merpire fashion, she has surprises and special guests planned for this Howler show.

Fluid and indeterminate of age, Merpire’s second record, MILK POOL holds a deep and pure romanticism for places and people and how that changes with time. If Merpire sounds vaguely familiar to you, you might’ve heard her as Double J’s ‘feature album’, or seen her when you flicked through Rolling Stone magazine, Beat Mag, Paul Dempsey’s instagram story or as The Music’s cover artist. Or maybe you saw her on tour with Bernard Fanning and Paul Dempsey (Fanning Dempsey National Park) and Bombay Bicycle Club (UK) late last year.

Opening the show will be the genre-defying producer and songwriter, Elizabeth M. Drummond and her band. Elizabeth produced ‘Rosanna’, a stand-out track off Merpire’s MILK POOL.

With new fans around the country falling quickly in love with Merpire’s new music and eagerly awaiting her next show, don’t miss out on this one.

Who: Merpire

Indie

There’s something quite animalistic about Merpire’s music - the moniker of Naarm/Melbourne-based Rhiannon Atkinson-Howatt - whose huge, gritty voice, whimsical turn-of-phrase and inimitable chord choices seem impossible to tame, were it not for a sobering honesty that could heal even the most stoic crowd. Merpire’s songs aren’t just effortless, catchy dark-pop anthems deserving of a home in the 90s Garbage or Caroline Polachek canon - soaring through every track is a subtext profound enough to stop you in your tracks.

It’s no wonder her debut album, ‘Simulation Ride’ (ADA Records), released in 2021, received high praise on BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders’ Future Artists, NPR, triple j, feature album on Double J, La Blogothèque, CLASH Magazine, NME, The Sunday Times and more. And Merpire’s captivating, queer, all-femme band has taken her dark anthems to the stage at PANAMA, Brunswick Music Fest, NYE on the hill, and supports for the likes of Julia Jacklin, Angie Mcmahon and Hockey Dad.

With powerful, versatile performances that are an emotional roller coaster to behold, it wasn’t long before the word spread abroad, including to the hearts of Irish indie-rock outfit, Pillow Queens. After their double appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Pillow Queens took Merpire’s band around the UK in May 2022 on a sold out, 8-date tour, collecting new fans eager for her return in her wake.

Now in 2024, Merpire has received funding from Creative Australia, taking her on her first headline tour around the UK in May. All building towards Merpire’s next undeniable gift.
