Legendary UK clarinettist Michael Collins mixes the classics with the common man.
In his triumphant return to Australian stages, Collins gives a standout performance of Aaron Copland’s timeless Clarinet Concerto, brilliantly showcasing the clarinet’s expressive range, opening with one of most moving and tender melodies before launching into an energetic cacophony filled with jazz rhythms.
This modern classic is followed by the world premiere of Graeme Koehne’s Double Clarinet Concerto — written for Michael Collins and Artistic Director David Rowden — a tongue in cheek work of joyful contrasts, full of soul-searching melodies and heart-racing rhythms.
This side-winding performance also features Grammy-nominated composer Anna Clyne’s Stride, refracting fragments of Beethoven’s Pathétique Sonata, in a captivating exploration of tension and release.
