Who: The Yowies

Disco

Homegrown and fresh off the estates of Manchester, The Yowies are the new renegades of funk. The name ‘Yowie’ comes from Aboriginal folklore and is mentioned in the Australian cartoon The Big Lez Show, which inspired the band’s name. Much like Big Lez, The Yowies aim to bring a smile and playful energy to their shows while maintaining an underlying complexity of thought in their rhythmic switches.

The Yowies are a modern collective with a unique fusion of timeless funk, soul, and the infectious energy of the early 2000s. At the heart of the band’s sound are distinctive saxophone melodies, weaving through each track like a smooth, soulful thread entwining the vocal harmonies.

Inspired by artists such as Jamiroquai, Michael Jackson, Average White Band, Groove Armada, Amy Winehouse, Parcels, as well as the funky rhythms of Nile Rodgers, The Yowies channel the soul and swagger of the past with a contemporary twist. Their music is built for both late-night dancefloors and sun-soaked afternoons, drawing on the vibrant spirit of classic house anthems while infusing every song with a skanky funk and soul groove. Whether you’re vibing to their infectious rhythm section, getting lost in the soulful vocals, or feeling the sax’s warm embrace, The Yowies is a sonic journey that’s as familiar as it is forward-thinking, bridging the gap between past and present with every beat.
