Who: Red Seal

Electro House
In the heart of Manchester’s 1990s music scene, amid the infamous house parties of Hulme, the story of Red Seal began. Glenn Nash, a regular host, crossed paths with Paul Dering and Shane McGovern, their connection cemented by mutual friend Stevie Jay at the iconic Dry Bar on Oldham Street. Their shared passion for music was immediate. The trio pooled resources to book studio time, eventually building their own home setup with an old PC and Cubase software, refining their sound and producing a demo. Their demo caught the ear of Leroy Richardson, manager of Dry 201, who introduced them to Martin Moscrop (of ACR) and DJ John Dasilva, who produced their initial EP. This pivotal moment led to a significant signing in 1993 with Robs Records, the brainchild of Rob Gretton, a key figure in the Manchester music scene. Gretton’s label, imbued with the DIY ethos of Factory Records, the legendary label behind Joy Division and New Order, provided the perfect platform for Red Seal’s unique sound. Under the Robs Records banner, Red Seal released their debut EP and embarked on a tour of America in 1994, selling thousands of records. However, their momentum was halted with the tragic passing of Rob Gretton. His death ultimately led to the closure of Robs Records, prematurely ending Red Seal’s initial chapter. Now, 30 years later, Red Seal is ready to reignite their innovative sound, a testament to the enduring spirit of Manchester’s musical legacy and a tribute to Rob Gretton’s vision.
