Who: The Prongs
Alternative
Part incendiary cabaret, part rock n’ roll situationist art form, The Prongs sprang from the imaginations of musician, composer and sound-designer Niall Toner jr. and award-winning playwright, novelist, essayist and prankster John Fleming in 2023. Inspired by Fleming’s cult Irish novel The Now Now Express, the long-time Dublin friends decided to drag the fictional band from its pages into reality. The novel’s smart alec heroes find solace in the sharp worldview and music of The Prongs whose chewed-up cassette tapes sit on top of their fridge in a dingy flat in London’s E17 in the 1980s. Following a live headline debut at Dublin’s Project Arts Centre in the summer of 2023, The Prongs went on to perform in London’s Camden Irish Cultural Centre with Sean O’Hagan of Microdisney, at the All Together Now Festival in Waterford and in front of large crowds and Dublin’s Whealn’s and The Button Factory, where Martin Bramah of the Fall performed his debut Irish solo show in support. The Prongs have spent the summer recording a full-length album due for release in the winter, concluding shooting on a film entitled The Unlikely Assasination of a Saint, directed by Dave Clifford, and performing live shows.
