African Traditions

Mathieu Chauzu (aka Sadoo) was born in France in 1980 but grew up between Europe, Asia and Africa.

Sensitive to different cultures and rocked by traditional music, he is attracted to music even though no one of his family is a musician.

Around 7 or 8 years old he is given a wooden flute, he is determined to reproduce the sound of the wind and to tame it but will never succeed. So he finally tried his hand at the piano, but he and his family moved often and traveled a lot and there were long periods without playing any scale on a piano.

Then he played with guitarist friends on percussion, and then these same friends sometimes asked him to do rhythms on a guitar, they showed him chords. Since then the guitar became part of his life, travelling and singing with it.

As he wanted to keep these « world » influences, he chose to play world music and reggae music. His first songs were composed, written , rehearsed and played in the streets of Dublin, on beaches of Senegal, Gambia or Cape Verde, under the Andalusian sun or in the mountains or the french countryside.

In the 2000’s , Sadoo moved to Senegal, first he worked in music studio as a sound assistant, in « Maison Yes » one of the big place for Senegalease hip hop at that time, then at Xippi Studio, the studio of Youssou N’Dour, where the big names of Senegalese mbalax music came to record. The place was magic for the diversity of productions and for meeting artist.

Then Sadoo decided to take time for his own music and started to play with the griot and kora player Lamine Kouyate. It s a vocal duet with kora and guitar “Silaba”: The great African road. Their music aims to unite, , mix styles, rhythms, languages while highlighting the Kora and African culture. The great road will take them on tour through Senegal, Cape Verde in Ireland and then in France.

Based in Lyon since 2010, as soon as he can, Sadoo continues to travel to feed his influences and vibes. He continues his musical journey through mixed music projects such as his solo show “From The World” which gave the album “Solo Acoustic Session”, or with his band “Ethno Combo” (double bass, percussion, guitar, vocals and saxophone ). The journey continues with the album “Songs for a Sunset”, a guitar and voice album, where the atmospheres of the album are recorded in Vietnam.

Since 2017 Sadoo also plays for storytellers, coloring stories with music. Throughout the pandemic and covid period, they are called upon to play for children and adults. On the other hand the music for all the underground circles, festivals, pubs, clubs, restaurants in France is very limited… and has it really taken over? At least it was the right moment for Sadoo to work in parallel on a new album “Goût Sucré”
