Nollaig na mBan is Maeve Brennan’s Birthday, celebrate her life & work at the United Arts Club with the Emilie Conway Trio & Grainne Blair
" star of the show is Conway’s voice" - Hot Press “well beyond the average jazz vocalist’s fare” - the Irish Times “splendid” - the Sunday Independent
Maeve Brennan was born on Nollaig na mBan, January 6, 1917. Come celebrate her life & work in words & music with the Emilie Conway Trio and historian Grainne Blair.
Maeve Brennan, the Ranelagh-born writer, known as the Long Winded Lady, was a trail blazer as a much-admired social diarist with the New Yorker during the 1950s and 1960s. In this popular show that draws full houses, Conway has woven together extracts from Brennan’s writing with an eclectic musical selection that charts Brennan’s progress from daughter of Irish revolutionaries (her parents were both active in the 1916 Rising) to doyen of New York’s high society to respected short story writer to abject destitution in later life.
Especially for Nollaig na mBan, venerable feminist historian, activist and UAC member, Grainne Blair, will give an introduction and perform readings.
Conway has presented this imaginative show to great acclaim in Chicago, New York, the National Concert Hall, Dublin, Dunamaise Arts Centre and most recently for Ranelagh Arts Centre. Don’t miss this fresh and unusual piece of literary chamber music.
