About the Event

Tarun Balani and Jivraj Singh have always compared notes from their respective artistic lives. From this interweaving of practices to music-making might seem like a short step - yet it has taken well over a decade for this collaboration to materialise.

The extended gestation period allowed for an appropriate configuration of forces to emerge. For Tarun, this is marked by a focus on keyboard-based composition, stimulated by his ongoing exploration of the craft of synthesis. Jivraj’s path, meanwhile, has taken him resolutely into the lifeworld of experimental music, with its intrinsic riddles about texture, time, space, and silence.

What ultimately draws the two musicians together is a shared commitment to use music as an agent of free-thinking directed against the status quo, and a deepening trust in the mysterious ritual of listening.

Both Tarun and Jivraj will be on multiple instruments - synthesisers, drum set, percussion, trumpet, electronics, and sound-making materials of various kinds.

Who: Tarun Balani

Jazz

Tarun’s music and artistry has been described as “nothing short of remarkable” (AllAboutJazz, USA) and his debut album, Sacred World has said to “Point to the future of jazz in India” (Time Out, Magazine, India).

With his much-anticipated record, Dharma, Tarun delivers yet another fearless, imaginative and heartfelt set of music.

While Tarun continues to feature his eclectic quintet with trumpeter Adam O’ Farrill, pianist Sharik Hasan, guitarist Olli Hirvonen and bassist Tilman Oberbeck across the globe, he also broadens his palette with a gripping new live act as Seasonal Affected Beats in India.

An inward and spiritual experience for Tarun, music has had a very special impact on his life, in finding his voice as an artist, and building a career as a composer, performer and an educator. His music is driven by a restless desire to be a holistic artist, and inspired by his Indian roots.

Tarun’s music has been featured on WNYC, MTV, VH1, Coke Studio India, hr2 Kultur, Red Bull Music, and HIT95FM. Tarun endorses Zildjian cymbals and Sensory Percussion.
