Who: Marisa Martins -mezzosoprano-
The Argentine-Spanish mezzo-soprano Marisa Martins is one of today’s most versatile and distinguished voices, acclaimed for her passionate and profound interpretations. Her career has been recognized with a 2004 Grammy Award nomination for Best Opera Recording with Xavier Montsalvatge’s El gato con botas, conducted by Antoni Ros Marbà, as well as the 2008 Orphée d’Or in the category Grandes Voix Humaines for her performance in El gran burlador.
Her operatic repertoire is broad and diverse, ranging from Monteverdi (Ottavia, Proserpina, Minerva) to Mozart (Dorabella, Annio, Zerlina, Idamante, Tamiri) and Rossini (Zaida, Doralice, Roggiero). She has performed these roles on prestigious stages such as the Gran Teatre del Liceu, the Teatro Real in Madrid, La Monnaie in Brussels, the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, and the Mozart Festival in A Coruña. In 2006, celebrating Mozart’s 250th anniversary, she made her debut at the Salzburg Festival with L’oca del cairo and Lo sposo deluso, a milestone in her career.
She has worked with renowned conductors including René Jacobs, Fabio Biondi, Christopher Hogwood, Alberto Zedda, and Harry Bicket, enriching her artistry and expanding her international profile.
Driven by a strong interest in the relationship between voice and movement, she takes part in innovative productions that combine music and contemporary dance in theatres in Basel, Lucerne, Berlin, Cologne, and New York, collaborating with choreographers such as Trisha Brown and Joachim Schloemer, and exploring new artistic languages.
She is also a distinguished performer of Lied, with a special focus on French and Spanish repertoire. She has premiered works by Catalan composers such as Montsalvatge, Mompou, Ortega, Benguerel, Palomar, and Mestres Quadreny, playing a key role in promoting their music within the contemporary scene.
Her discography reflects this versatility: Monteverdi Madrigali Guerrieri ed Amorosi (Harmonia Mundi) with René Jacobs; works by Mompou (Warner Music) with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Galicia; and several recordings for Columna Música, including Combat del Somni, Benguerel’s Requiem (CD Compact Award 2007), and Xavier Montsalvatge: Integral de Canto (Vol. I).
