Born and raised in West Yorkshire, Zach Thompson is a folk singer firmly rooted in the time-honoured bardic and balladeer traditions of both the British and Irish isles. Having long cut his teeth in the dusty venues of South-East London, his work synthesises an almost endless range of literary and musical influences, from English Modernism and the poetry of the French symbolists to the broadsides of Appalachian folk and the Beat Generation.
At the heart though is Thompson’s singular and powerful voice, which after years of residencies and local sets has been finally captured to tape. His debut EP, Algebra Parable, is set to arrive on the 12th June, with first single ‘Be As It May’ being released on the 15th April. Recorded live with a nine-piece band over two days at Fish Factory studios in London, it reflects not only Thompson’s passion for the dynamics of live sound, but also his distinctive and meticulous approach to songwriting itself. The result is a record that is as arresting as it is inscrutable, the clear stamp of an artist who has both arrived fully formed and yet possesses all the room in the world to keep growing.
