BIO – Mopao Mumu
Mopao Mumu is a Montreal-based singer-songwriter whose sound is as global as her
roots. Born in Kinshasa, Congo, and raised in South Africa, she brings a rich cultural tapestry
to her music, blending soul, R&B, and Afrobeat with emotional depth and stylistic finesse.
Her stage name pays homage to two key influences: the legendary Congolese icon Koffi
Olomidé nicknamed Mopao, or “the king” and “Mumu,” a tender nod to her middle name.
Her artistry is also deeply inspired by Congolese musical pioneers such as Mbilia Bel, Tshala
Muana, and Abeti Maskini trailblazing women who reshaped the landscape of African music
with grace, power, and originality.
Since launching her career in 2020, Mopao Mumu has emerged as a rising force in Canada’s
music scene. She has collaborated with respected artists like Pierre Kwenders, DJ Karaba,
Lou Phelps, and Nico de Andrea, and her dynamic stage presence has earned her high-
profile appearances, most notably a standout performance at the 2023 Montreal
International Jazz Festival and a headlining show at Studio TD in 2024.
Her talent and unique voice have garnered strong co-signs from industry heavyweights
including Kaytranada and Nk.F, along with consistent support from cultural institutions
such as Radio-Canada and Télé-Québec. With each performance and release, Mopao
Mumu continues to solidify her place as a vital voice in the new wave of African and diasporic
music.
