Who: kariti
Atmospheric Dark Folk
kariti (карити) - ’to mourn the dead’ in church Slavonic - is an emotional & creative outlet of ekaterina - a Russian-born poet and songwriter based in Italy. Her debut ‘Covered Mirrors’ was released in 2020 (Aural music) and represents a “cathartic peregrination through bereavement’. The sophomore record ‘Dheghom’ (Lay Bare recordings, 2024) saw a development in sound, songwriting and instrumentation played by ekaterina, adding key instruments to her previously main tool - guitar. Dheghom also features a few contributions by guest musicians and a haunting duet with Dorthia Cottrell (Windhand). Marco, the leader of the heavy sludge band Grime contributes to some of the songs with additional guitars/drones/noise and often joins kariti for live performances.
Starting to play live only in 2022, kariti toured multiple times in Europe and in the UK, sharing the stage with bands like Messa and Brutus and often performing in unique venues such as church ruins and cemeteries. Her intense live shows have been described as liturgy-like, enigmatic and cathartic. In September 2023, an industrial/ trip-hop/shoegaze s/t EP was released under the moniker Néant - a collaboration between ekaterina and Void of the Parisian industrial sludge collective Non Serviam. According to CVLT Nation ‘if Portishead, Spirit Possession, The Bug, and The Body decided to create music together — the outcome just might sound like this band’. Ekaterina is frequently asked to compose vocal lines, write lyrics and lend her voice to extreme bands, including 2024 releases by Bedsore (IT, 20 BUCK SPIN) and Limbes (FR, Frozen Records). In October 2024 a special performance took place - a live score for Robert Wiene’s 1924 Austrian silent horror classic ‘Orlac’s Hände’; commissioned by Trieste Science+Fiction Film Festival. kariti’s latest album ‘still life’ was released on November 7th, 2025 and will be followed by tours and festival appearances.
