Laat je niet misleiden door Sugar Spine’s bandnaam: hier is helemaal niks zoets aan. Deze Utrechts/Australische sloopformatie mengt woeste metal met hardcore gitaarwerk, en groeide zo razendsnel uit tot een van ‘s lands meest veelbelovende metalbands. Het viertal deelde het podium al met internationale acts als Jesus Piece, Breakdown of Sanity, Half Me en Misery Signals. En dat terwijl ze pas krap twee jaar bestaan. De band ontstond tijdens een quarantaine in Australië. Uit verveling begon frontman Josh Muncke wat te riffen. Eenmaal vrijgelaten belde hij bassist Koen Vroom, drummer Tom Verstappen en gitarist Sietse de Krieger op – en het monster was geboren. Niet veel later verscheen debuutalbum Emerald: een brok frustratie, woede en riffgeweld die knipoogt naar bands als Slipknot, END en Boundaries. Nu is Sugar Spine terug met een nieuwe EP, die ze presenteren in De Helling. Een thuiswedstrijd dus. Samen met twee gevaarlijke support-acts komt Sugar Spine De Helling tot de laatste steen afbreken.
Sugar Spine is an aggressive mix of hardcore and metalcore based in the Netherlands. Exploring themes of self-worth, love, hate and loss, the music sits comfortably in those uncomfortable feelings.
The band originally started as a solo project at the end of 2021 by vocalist Josh Muncke, with the first single Go Outside being written and produced in a 2-week hotel quarantine in Sydney, Australia. In 2023, the project became a full group based in NL, ready to hit the stage and unleash their infectious energy.
