Red Oak Troubadours @ EKKO

Did you know that traditional Portuguese folk music goes far beyond just fado? You’ll find a wide range of influences in it, including Celtic, Arabic, and African!

In the summer of 2024, the Dutch folk band Red Oak Troubadours traveled from Utrecht to Portugal for a two-month residency. There, they worked together with folk musician Isabel Martinez and immersed themselves in the music and culture. The result is Prima Materia, an EP that explores the rich landscapes of Portuguese folk music from a modern and multicultural perspective.

The band is going all out to celebrate the release of the EP. The Release Show will take place at EKKO in Utrecht on September 12th, 2025. The evening promises to be a cultural and immersive event, with traditional Portuguese music, community, and creativity at its heart. Up-and-coming Portuguese artist O Marta will travel to Utrecht and open the night with a performance that showcases his own unique interpretation of Portuguese music.

While the Red Oak Troubadours take a multicultural approach—blending Portuguese folk with their own influences from American folk, blues, and rock—O Marta takes a more abstract path, deconstructing the tradition and merging it with drum’n’bass and experimental electronic music. Together, these unique artists will take you on a captivating journey through Portugal.

Beyond the stage, a collective of multidisciplinary artists will be exhibiting and selling their work in the EKKO café, creating a vibrant creative market.

This event is made possible with the support of Gemeente Utrecht and Dutch Culture.
