The National Youth Fanfare Orchestra (NJFO), the flagship orchestra of the Dutch fanfare culture, was founded in 1959 and has been the best example of a fanfare since its inception. The musicians of the NJFO are young musicians between the ages of 15 and 27, including highly talented amateurs and conservatory students. The NJFO offers this young talent, after a successful audition, an unparalleled opportunity to develop within the orchestra. The mentality during rehearsal weekends, tours, or workshops are unique, and everyone encourages each other to bring out the best in themselves, both musically and personally.
Additionally, the orchestra has contributed to the development of the unique Dutch fanfare culture. The NJFO advocates for repertoire innovation for the fanfare orchestra, and with this goal, composers such as Hans de Jong, Ed de Boer, Merlijn Twaalfhoven, Jan de Haan and Rob Goorhuis have written new works for the fanfare orchestra.
Over the past decades, the NJFO has been a pioneer in talent development and programming. Under the direction of conductor Piebe Bakker, who led the orchestra for more than 25 years, young musicians from all over the country developed into mature musicians, ready for a career as professional musicians or ambitious amateurs. Since 1989, the orchestra has been under the leadership of Danny Oosterman, continuing the tradition of Piebe Bakker.
