When:

Marcus Henry V @ Splendor Amsterdam

Marcus Henry V celebrates the release of their first album ‘On the Move’.

Marcus Henry V is a collective of three souls who found common ground in the universal language of sound. What began as Marco Hijl’s solo exploration in 2022 became a vibrant cultural dialogue in 2025 with the addition of Jelena Popović and Peter van Aart. They are not just musicians; they are emotional alchemists, transforming diverse cultural histories into a singular, compelling narrative.

Their debut album, On the Move, is a passport to a new sonic landscape. It is a bold, borderless fusion where the deep, soulful structures of jazz meet the timeless emotional resonance of contemporary classical music, all woven through with the rhythmic pulse of electronica and the storytelling heart of folk. This is music that reflects the modern world: complex, connected, and constantly evolving.

Who: Marcus Henry V

Contemporary Jazz

Marcus Henry V is a trio that had its first performance in 2025 and has since made an impression with an adventurous blend of Jazz and Global music. Their sound is built entirely on original compositions and is characterized by a strong emphasis on improvisation, allowing the unique personalities of the three musicians to shine through.

The trio features classically trained Serbian pianist Jelena Popovic, whose virtuosic playing carries a powerful emotional depth. Her melodies are both refined and expressive, providing the perfect foundation for the unpredictable grooves of percussionist Peter van Aart. With a deep respect for tradition, Peter transforms rhythms into contemporary beats that continue to surprise and inspire movement.

Saxophonist Marco brings a distinctive dimension to the sound of Marcus Henry V. Influenced by legends like John Coltrane and the minimalist tones of Philip Glass, he weaves melodies and harmonies into fluid improvisations that are both adventurous and introspective.

Together, Marcus Henry V creates a musical experience where boundaries blur and worlds merge. The trio explores the tension between structure and freedom, taking the audience on a journey through their unique soundscape.
