What: Lucy Woodward @ Theater De Regentes

When:

Lucy Woodward @ Theater De Regentes

Lucy Woodward & New Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra fuse soaring vocals, tight grooves, and vivid orchestration into a fearless, genre-blurring sound. At the center is Lucy—an emotionally rich, magnetic vocalist who moves effortlessly from fiery to sultry. In her, NRJO found a daring, like-minded artist, sparking a creative connection that led them to explore new musical ground together.

Composers Louk Boudesteijn (NRJO co-founder) and Jelle Roozenburg (Lucy’s longtime guitarist and collaborator) released Lucy Woodward & The Rocketeers (GroundUP Music, 2024)—a debut of inventive reimaginings of songs by artists such as Nina Simone and Billy Strayhorn. Building on that foundation, their new material will lean even further into original compositions, deepening the group’s creative voice. Rooted in NRJO’s long-standing commitment to original music, the project blends personal storytelling continuing to push boundaries and open new artistic territory.

A New Yorker at heart, Lucy has headlined major European jazz stages with her trio, Charlie Hunter, and Snarky Puppy, and appeared with big bands such as Frankfurt Radio, WDR, and Danish Radio. For over 20 years, NRJO has redefined the modern big band through genre-defying collaborations with artists like Carla Bley, Joshua Redman, Phronesis, Jason Lindner, and Mark de Clive-Lowe—constantly expanding their dynamic original repertoire.

Who: Lucy Woodward

Singer-songwriter

LUCY WOODWARD releases Stories From The Dust. It is perhaps her most personal album yet, as crafted with GRAMMY Award-winning co-producer and co-writer of most of the songs on the album David Garza (Fiona Apple, Gaby Moreno). David and Lucy spent several weeks in downtown LA writing these stories about women, the ones she grew up with—the fiercely independent and unconventional women who raised her—and those she merely observed from afar, whether in the sandbox or on the subway. Stories From The Dust features bass extraordinaire Tim Lefebvre, Amy Wood on drums and co-writer Larry Goldings. Inspired by Bill Withers and Nina Simone, she added inspiration from the deep rivers of Americana, blues, flamenco singing and the sounds of the female voices from Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66. Stories From The Dust is rootsy and melodic, continuing a decades-long streak of craft oriented, critically acclaimed full length albums from the New York native. In July 2024, Lucy releases her first live album Lucy Woodward & The Rocketeers on GroundUP Music. The album features her bespoke 18-person jazz collective inspired by American composers such as Nina Simone and Billy Strayhorn, with dynamic arrangements explicitly written to match Lucy’s passionate vocal manner, color, and timbre; the songs range from high-energy explosions to hauntingly intimate meditations.

Other collaborations include Charlie Hunter, Pink Martini (singing in Croatian, Turkish, Spanish, French and Japanese on a few days’ notice), several larger ensembles in Europe such as WDR Big Band, Danish Radio Big Band, Frankfurt Radio Big Band and Orchestra de la Suisse Romande. Recording/touring credits also include Rod Stewart, Snarky Puppy, Celine Dion, Charlie Hunter, Barbra Streisand and Chaka Khan, and has appeared on countless movie soundtracks.
